Garden to Table

2019 Autumn Time in the garden.

Room 5 again were busy on Tuesday harvesting and weeding. A couple of groups were spreading bark chips in the orchard and down the paths.  It was very dusty and they wore masks.  The recording group were picking flowers to put in the book and talked about what each of the other groups were doing.

In the kitchen we were cutting, slicing and grating of all the vegetables to make two delicious salads with a yummy dressing and Potato Zucchini Fritters.  Remember you can find all the recipes on the Garden to Table School Website.  We want to thank the wonderful parents and grandparents that helped out on Tuesday.
We hope you enjoy looking at our photos.

In the kitchen we made Feijoa cordial, potato scones with salsa. They were delicious!

ROOM 3.    Last Garden to Table for Term 1.

Tuesday 13th March 2018 Garden to Table

Garden To Table.

On Tuesday Room 3 had Garden to Table.  In the garden we planted lettuce, kale, bok choy and silver-beet.  You need to plant silver beet 2 to 3cm under the soil.  We did a lot of weeding around the fruit trees.  We harvested lettuce, tomatoes, courgettes, editable flowers and beetroot.  Guess what? We have 90 sunflowers in the school!

Then we went into the kitchen and made chocolate and beetroot pancakes with roasted apricots and yogurt. They were delicious! We hope you enjoy our pictures.

Chinese-Style Cucumber Salad
From the garden:
-    Cucumber
-   Red onion
-   Garlic

Ingredients
2 cucumbers
1 red onion
1 clove garlic
2 tablespoons sesame oil
4 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
4 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar

Method:
1.   Cut and tear cucumbers and place in a bowl.

2.   Finely slice onion and add to a small bowl with 2 tablespoons of the vinegar and water. Placing the onions in the liquids will help them to soften slightly and make their flavour more subtle.

3.   Crush garlic and add to cucumbers with sesame oil, the remaining 2 tablespoons of the vinegar, sugar and salt. Stir to combine.

4.   Remove onion slices from water and add to salad. Stir to combine.

5.   Place salad in the fridge until ready to eat.

 Cheddar and Yoghurt Garden Scones
From the garden:
-    Vegetables and herbs in season e.g. courgette, Swiss chard, spinach, sweetcorn

Ingredients
2 cobs sweet corn
1 courgette
1/2 cup garden herbs e.g. thyme, parsley
5 cups self raising flour
2 teaspoons salt
3 cups cheddar cheese
4 cups Greek yoghurt

Method:
1.   Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Line a baking tray with baking paper.

2.   Place two cobs of corn (husks on) in the microwave and microwave for 6 minutes. Remove and leave to cool. Once cool, peel off husks and careful scrape off kernels with a knife into a bowl.

3.   Grate courgette and finely chop herbs. Add to bowl with the corn.

4.   Mix together flour and salt in a large bowl.

5.   Grate cheese and add to flour with the corn, courgette and herbs. Stir to combine.

6.   Measure yoghurt and add to cheesy dry mixture. Use a knife to stir until a dough is formed.

7.   Using a spoon, drop small scoops of dough onto the baking tray. Sprinkle with extra cheese and bake until golden (10-15 minutes).

ROOM 3.    Tuesday 13th February 2018 Garden to Table

Room 3 enjoyed a beautiful day in the garden with Howard and helpers weeding, digging up potatoes, podding beans, planting celery and lettuces and finally harvesting.  We collected corn, tomatoes, zucchini and onion for our scones.

We then went into the kitchen with Jane and our wonderful parent helpers to make the salad, scones, butter and prepare plums for bottling.  The scones and salad were delicious!!!

Room 3 hope you enjoy our photos!
